- Tate McRae appeared in an ad for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which is being broadcast by NBC and Peacock in the U.S.
- Fans criticized her involvement in the spot, where she largely shouted out Team USA and the upcoming Super Bowl, because of her Canadian roots.
- The Grammy nominee has since responded to the backlash with a social media post.
When Tate McRae said she’s nobody’s girl, her hometown of Canada never thought they’d be included in that sentiment. The singer-songwriter, who was recently nominated for her first-ever Grammy for her F1 track, “Just Keep Watching,” just starred in an ad for the 2026 Winter Olympics…and she was seemingly gushing about Team USA athletes like Lindsey Vonn.
“Oh, hi, I’m a bit lost,” she says as she skis up to a white owl, who responds, “Who?” She then cheekily introduced herself as she removed her goggles and helmet to reveal her soft glam and bouncy blowout with a wink: “Tate McRae. I’m nobody—nobody’s girl, that is.”
She went on to explain that the Opening Ceremony was set to take place this Friday, February 6, ahead of the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 8.
“I’m trying to get to Milan for an amazing opening ceremony and meet Team USA,” she said. “Then it’s the weekend with America’s best skating for gold, and Lindsey Vonn’s epic comeback. Then come back to the States for the big game, Super Bowl LX.”
Naturally, fans in her comments section had something to say about her promoting Team USA in the ad instead of her hometown of Calgary, Canada.
“The very American Tate McRae,” one fan wrote alongside an emoji of the Canadian flag, while someone else added, “The absolute ick every Canadian just felt. In 2026… what were you and your team thinking?”
Someone else seemingly referenced the ongoing ICE raids in the U.S., saying, “Girl, we are Canadian, we do NOT cheer for team USA at winter sports, especially during times like these!!!”
Tate didn’t let the backlash go unnoticed. After posting the clip to her Instagram grid, she shared a baby photo of herself holding a Canadian flag, writing, “…Y’all know I’m Canada down.”
It’s important to note that Tate’s rumored boyfriend, New Jersey Devils hockey player Jack Hughes, is reportedly headed to Milan for the Winter Games. According to The New York Times, league sources say that Jack is “expected to be available for the Americans in Milan.” So, there’s a chance he may play for Team USA in the Olympics, which means Tate would have a pretty solid reason to root for them either way…just saying.
But she still gets the best of both worlds as Canada’s girl.
